about

Based on Greek Mythology, this song portrays Orpheus’ encounter with the Sirens whilst sailing past the end of the known world and back with Jason and the Argonauts. The epic journey they undertook was to retrieve the Golden Fleece, a priceless artefact stolen from Greece generations before them, so that Jason could have his rightful seat at the throne. Sirens hones in on the part of the story where the weary travellers are on their return journey after facing many life threatening obstacles and enemies. They over hear the song of the sirens and are so entranced they change course towards a rocky island where the sounds are coming from. This is the curse of the sirens, half bird and half woman, they sing beautiful melodies to attract sailors into dangerous waters where they will meet their peril. Orpheus understands what is happening and to avoid a certain death for all of the crew he dances up and down the ship playing music on his lyre that is more beautiful than that of the sirens. The crew become so infaturated with the music that Orpheus is playing that they forget about the sirens and are able to escape. Feeling hurt from seeing people ignore their music the sirens throw themselves into the water to drown.
